If you are bothered by cellulite; the lumpy, dimpling, or cottage cheese effect on your thighs, hips or abdomen, you are not alone. Approximately 85% of all women over 21 years of age complain of this concern, regardless of weight or fitness level. The causes of cellulite include multiple factors from genetics, weight loss or gain, thickness of the skin, and vertical fibrous bands that allow the fat to push upward and become visible on the surface of the skin.
Even women who are at their ideal weight may be troubled by this very common condition. Until now, there has not been an effective, long- term treatment for cellulite. Dr. Ringler is happy to introduce, Cellulaze, an FDA approved, minimally-invasive, effective surgical technique to help eliminate cellulite in a one-time treatment. Cellulaze is clinically proven to increase your skin’s natural thickness and elasticity for a smoother, healthier look that lasts. Dr. Ringler is the first plastic surgeon in Michigan to be able to offer Cellulaze to his patients.
What causes cellulite?
Aging, hormones, genetics and dramatic weight changes can all play a role in the appearance of cellulite. These factors can cause connective tissue bands under the skin to stiffen and the fat cells they surround to become larger and push up into the skin. That creates the “cottage cheese” effect you wish you could eliminate, which is even easier to see if you have thin skin. You can’t control these factors, regardless of diet and exercise. Approximately 85% of women over 21 years of age complain of cellulite.
What is Cellulaze?
Cellulaze is an FDA approved laser treatment developed by Cynosure that provides a long term solution for the reduction of cellulite. The Cellulaze treatment targets cellulite on your body and can reduce its appearance for one year or even longer. The Cellulaze technology reduces cellulite through tissue tightening and by promoting your body’s own creation of collagen. Many other anti-cellulite treatments focus on cellulite superficially, applying treatment above the skin. Only Cellulaze treats the fibrous bands beneath the skin, while also thickening and adding elasticity to the skin.
Who is a good candidate for Cellulaze?
*Women who are close to their ideal body weight, but still are bothered by cellulite on their thighs, hips, flanks or abdomen are the best candidates for the procedure
*Those who have realistic expectations of what Cellulaze can and cannot accomplish
*Those who are non-smokers
What can I expect during a Cellulaze treatment?
Cellulaze is an outpatient procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. Dr. Ringler will make one or more very small incisions (the size of pen tip) near the treatment site. A small tube called a canula will then be inserted through this incision. When the canula is inserted, Dr. Ringler will apply controlled laser energy to the treatment site. Thermal energy will then break up and stimulate skin cells and the hardened fat deposits, allowing the overlying skin to smooth out. Skin elasticity will also be increased. Most patients do not feel any pain during the procedure but may feel slight pressure. The procedure takes between 1-2 hours to perform. It may be performed as a stand alone procedure or in conjunction with liposuction or a tummy-tuck.
What about recovery and results?
Following your Cellulaze treatment, you may experience bruising, swelling and/or discomfort. Dr. Ringler may prescribe medication to manage discomfort and a compression garment for swelling. You will need to limit your activity for a day or two, but you should be able to walk shortly after treatment and resume work the following day depending on the nature of your job.
The cellulite skin tightening effects are typically realized by three months following surgery. They continue to improve for the six months following surgery as your body builds new collagen. Results appear to be maintained for at least 2 1/2 years following the treatment. Patients are very excited about Cellulaze as it offers a much longer, one -time treatment for cellulite and addresses the underlying structure of cellulite as opposed to treating cellulite superficially as has been the case in the past.
Thus far, 93% of patients have been satisfied or very satisfied one year post Cellulaze treatment and all would recommend Cellulaze to a friend. Clinically, skin elasticity and skin thickness were both improved after one Cellulaze treatment.
