Help for “Bitchy Resting Face”

Posted on July 19, 2013 by Dr. Ringler

A funny YouTube video that has gone viral talks about having a “bitchy resting face”. The woman in the video consistently has people asking her if something is wrong because they think she is in a bad mood.  She isn’t.  As she says, she just has a “bitchy resting face.”  Apparently she is not alone.

Although partially genetic, there are some changes that occur to the face over time that can make you look angry or overly concerned even when you’re not.  Repeated furrowing of the brow can cause a deep wrinkle between the eyebrows.  This is something can easily be treated in about 15 minutes with…

Do You Hate Your Neck?

Posted on May 20, 2013 by Dr. Ringler

Beautiful NeckIf you find yourself hating your neck as you’ve gotten older, you are not alone. The neck is a body part that few people younger than 30 or 40 spend much time thinking about, and yet for those 45 and over, there may be a noticeable difference in the quality, and sometimes quantity, of skin on the neck. Our neck is often neglected when we apply sunscreen or skincare products.

Fortunately, there are solutions to the problem of “turkey neck” or necks that have begun to lose some elasticity, firmness and skin tone. Turtlenecks and scarves are not the only answer to the problem.  Hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and fine lines…

Most Common Plastic Surgery Procedures for Men

Posted on November 20, 2012 by Dr. Ringler

Although men still only represent about 10% of plastic surgery patients nationally, we have experienced a significant increase in men seeking plastic surgery over the past few years. According to a recent article by ASAPS, here are some of the more common complaints that men express as they age, and how they can best be addressed.

Even with diet and exercise, maintaining a fat free physique is a complaint we often hear in our practice. Fortunately, with body contouring procedures ranging from the non-surgical CoolSculpting procedure to several different types of liposuction, many of these problems can be addressed fairly easily. Just as with women, men who are close to…

California Tightens up Regulations on Medi-Spas

Posted on August 10, 2012 by Dr. Ringler

California’s Governor Jerry Brown has recently signed into law a new regulation that intends to increase supervision on medi-spas that offer cosmetic surgery procedures such as Botox, facial fillers and cellulite treatments. Many medi-spas, and not just in California, claim to have physician oversight, although often, it is in name only. Some of the facilities in the past have been accused of failing to ensure patient safety by allowing untrained individuals to administer these treatments. If there is a problem, there is often no physician on-site to administer treatment or offer medical advice in the event of complications.

The new law, which goes into effect January 1, 2013, will increase…

The Buzz on Belotero

Posted on July 23, 2012 by Dr. Ringler

Have you heard about Belotero, the latest entry into the facial fillers line-up? It can get confusing with all the players in the hyaluronic acid fillers field, so we thought we might help clear up some of the confusion.

Much like Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane, Belotero is hyaluronic acid dermal filler for the superficial lines and moderate to severe wrinkles on the face and is designed to add subtle volume and plumpness to facial tissue. This hyaluronic acid-based gel offers natural looking results with little recovery time. Since the gel is softer than most other products on the market, it integrates into facial skin more easily and adapts…

The Basics on Botox and Facial Fillers

Posted on May 9, 2012 by Dr. Ringler

In my plastic surgery practice we all become so accustomed to talking aboutBotox and dermal facial fillers on a daily basis, that we may incorrectly assume that everyone knows all about these procedures and their uses. But it occurred to me that there are probably many people who may not know the difference between how Botox and facial fillers work to reduce facial wrinkles. So here are the basics.

According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) Botox® Cosmetic is currently the number one non-surgical procedure in the country and has been since it was FDA approved in 2002. Botox is a Botulinum Toxin Type A…

Surgical and Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation

Posted on January 2, 2012 by Dr. Ringler

It is fairly often that patients ask me if they are going to be able to achieve the same benefit from a non-surgical facelift as they are from a full facelift. Although a facelift is still the gold-standard for turning back the clock on facial aging, there are more non-surgical options available today than ever before for patients who are not ready for a facelift.

For those men and women who have lost their skin elasticity and have considerable jowling of their jawline and sagging in the neck, a facelift is going to give the most satisfying results. For younger patients, or those with good skin elasticity and realistic expectations,…

Grand Rapids Xeomin – Latest Option in Attacking Wrinkles

Posted on November 2, 2011 by Dr. Ringler

In July, the FDA approved Xeomin (Z-O-MIN) as the latest botulinum toxin type A treatment to help reduce wrinkles.  Joining Botox and Dysport, Xeomin works on the same principle as both of the other products by temporarily blocking the signals from the nerves to muscles. The FDA approved Xeomin for treating the wrinkles between the eyebrows, sometimes referred to as the “11’s” and keeps those muscles from fully contracting, thereby reducing wrinkling.
The product has been used around the world since 2005 and was introduced to the United States by Merz Pharmaceuticals in 2010.  In the past, it has been used to treat adult cervical dystonia, decreasing their neck pain…

Facial Volume Creates Youthful Appearance

Posted on August 17, 2011 by Dr. Ringler

Patients often believe that tightening and lifting the skin with a facelift is the only way to recreate a more youthful appearance for the face. If you look at pictures of yourself when you were in your 20′s, the most apparent thing you will most likely notice is that your face was fuller when you were younger. Through the aging process our faces tend to lose volume as the fat breaks down. If you had a rounder, chubbier face in your 20′s, you may be very happy with more evident cheekbones and loss of some of the facial fat as your face matures. For many women and men, however,…

Many plastic surgeons take a minimalist, “less is more” approach to their work when performing fat transfer procedures and the like on patients who want to appear younger.

Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Neal Reisman wrote in Culture Map that when it comes to plastic surgery, the “goal is not to appear different than we did when we were younger, but look as we did at an earlier time.” What causes these changes to the face is the loss of volume experienced over time and as an effect of sun exposure.

To remedy this looseness in the skin that results in lines and wrinkles, Dr. Reisman often recommends
