Tummy Tuck Grand Rapids

Weight gain, weight loss and other factors that are beyond your control such as heredity may contribute to an abdomen that protrudes, or folds over your waistline. These conditions may be limited to a small pouch around the navel or conditions may be more extensive and reach into the love handles.

At the Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery in Grand Rapids, Dr. Ringler will customize an individualized treatment plan, using specialized techniques to safely sculpt a flat, toned, masculine abdomen and waist that complements your body and meets your goals.

A tummy tuck may used as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with the SmartLipo Triplex laser body sculpting for maximum results.

Dr. Ringler is often able to utilize a new surgical approach to abdominoplasty that eliminates the need for a surgical drain at the incision site following surgery. Many of our patients are much more comfortable without the necessity of a surgical drain. Please discuss this option with Dr. Ringler at the time of your consultation.

What is an abdominoplasty?

  • Adominoplasty, commonly called a tummy tuck, creates a flatter, toned abdomen by reducing excess abdominal skin and tissue.
  • An abdominoplasty may include: Correction of diastasis, a condition in which the abdominal muscles have vertically become separated.
  • The correction of excess skin and fat of the upper and lower abdomen typically involves an incision that may be several inches in length and extends from hip to hip, right above the pubic area. There may also be a small incision around the belly button.

What techniques do you use for tummy-tuck?

Dr. Ringler uses various techniques with abdominoplasty based on your body type and specific goals.  Newer techniques have allowed for the elimination of surgical drains post-operatively for most patients.  These plastic surgical drains are typically employed to reduce seroma, which is the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen post-operatively.  The two new preferred techniques that Dr. Ringler uses to increase patient comfort and speed recovery are the Avelar technique, when a tummy tuck is combined with liposuction, and the use of progression tension sutures. There are times when a mini tummy tuck is all that is necessary for patients to achieve their goals.

What is an Avelar tummy tuck?

This type of tummy tuck is named after Dr. Juarez Avelar who pioneered the technique in Brazil in the 1990′s. When this technique was first developed, there were more complications when tummy tuck and liposuction were performed in combination.  Dr. Avelar developed a tummy tuck technique that kept the  fat and skin from being separated from the fascia; the blood vessels remained intact throughout the procedure. With this technique, the risk of seroma (the accumulation of fluids) is minimized, blood flow to the tissues remains intact and risk is minimized.  With the improved blood flow, liposuction can be safely added to the abdominoplasty procedure.  By eliminating the need for outside  plastic surgical drains and improving the blood flow, your  recovery is quicker, providing more comfort and fewer complications.

What is the progression tension sutures technique?

This type of tummy tuck uses progression tension sutures to secure the abdominal flap to the underlying fascia, thereby distributing tension over a larger area.  This technique eliminates the space where the seroma formation would typically occur and provides excellent results.  By eliminating this space, there is no room for the seroma to develop and, therefore, there is no need for surgical drains. Typically, patients recover more quickly  with increased comfort and mobility following surgery and have fewer post-operative concerns.

 What is a mini tummy-tuck?

  • A mini-tummy tuck is the correction of limited excess skin confined to the central portion of the lower abdomen. It requires an incision at or just above the pubic region and   may be shorter in length than the one required for a full tummy-tuck.
  • Combining liposuction with a mini tummy-tuck can provide excellent results without the downtime of a full abdominoplasty for some patients.
  • Dr. Ringler often uses the Avelar technique for mini tummy-tuck procedures.

Why might an abdominoplasty be recommended for me?

Reshaping disproportionate curves or reducing unwanted fat and skin cannot always be attained through weight loss and exercise alone. Abdominoplasty may help you reshape body features that cannot be enhanced any other way. Abdominoplasty can dramatically improve the shape and proportion of your upper and lower abdomen, enhancing your appearance and your self-esteem.

Who is a candidate for tummy tuck?

Women and men of various ages and from many circumstances choose abdominoplasty. These factors generally define good candidates for abdominoplasty procedures:

  • You can clearly define why you want the surgery.
  • You understand what abdominoplasty can and cannot accomplish.
  • You accept the risks of abdominoplasty and your responsibilities as a patient.
  • You are healthy, emotionally stable and secure.
  • You accept that you will need to make healthy lifestyle choices to maintain the results achieved by abdominoplasty.
  • You have realistic expectations about your results

What should I know about abdominoplasty surgery?

  • Abdominoplasty is performed on an out-patient basis.
  • Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia.
  • Scars are normal after surgery and may be concealed by normal clothing and lingerie.
  • Recovery from abdominoplasty may take 1-2 weeks, but you will be up and active the day of surgery.
  • Dr. Ringler utilizes SofPulse  to accelerate healing following abdominoplasty. This technology uses targeted microcurrents to transmit gentle pulses to the tissue to help reduce swelling and speed up the natural recovery process.
  • Results are long-lasting, but weight loss/gain or pregnancy can change your results and normal aging and gravity may effect your outcomes over time.
  • You will need a capable adult with you for 24 hours after surgery.
  • Abdominoplasty may be used in conjunction with SmartLipo, BodyJet or SafeLipo.
